Students and parents experience an emotional pilgrimage to Santiago in honor of Saint Alberto Hurtado and Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Within the framework of Solidarity Month activities, on Thursday, August 13, the first pilgrimage to the city of Santiago took place—a profound experience of faith, history, and social commitment in which a delegation from our educational community participated.

The delegation was composed of 30 students from the 1st and 2nd-year Confirmation groups as well as the Catholic Leaders Network (Red de Líderes Católicos). The young students traveled accompanied by 8 parents, Sisters Carol García and Pilar Rodríguez, teacher Óscar Cruz, and featured the special presence of Camila Silva, Head of Support Services at Hogar de Cristo, along with social worker Valeska Gutiérrez, also from that institution.

Encounter with the legacy of Saint Alberto Hurtado

Upon arriving at the Sanctuary of Saint Alberto Hurtado, the group was welcomed by the National Chaplain of Hogar de Cristo, Fr. José Yuraszeck S.J., and the Rector of the Sanctuary, Fr. Claudio Barriga. In their welcome messages, both priests highlighted the value of seeing young people committed to keeping our patron saint's legacy alive. Likewise, they encouraged us to join the "Come and See" (Ven y verás) campaign, an invitation that this month calls us to view reality through the "lenses of solidarity" and love for our neighbor, just as Padre Hurtado did.

During their time at the sanctuary, the delegation toured the facilities of the first Hogar de Cristo shelter to learn firsthand about its current social services, visited the museum dedicated to the saint's life and work, and shared a deeply moving moment by participating in the Holy Mass celebrated directly over the tomb of Saint Alberto Hurtado, presided over by Father Claudio Barriga.

Tribute to the Patroness of Chile

Taking advantage of this apostolic journey and within the framework of the centennial of the coronation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the delegation also visited the Votive Temple of Maipú (Templo Votivo de Maipú). In this meaningful location, students and parents toured the grounds and discovered the rich history of this sanctuary built in honor of the Queen and Mother of Chile.
